Breakfast Creek Hotel-- Brisbane 2011 Floods

Oil on canvas 122 x 91.5 cm

My city, OH, what a devastation, pain , struggle and loss. The major floods come after weeks of heavy rain. Normally the Brisbane river  runs from the great dividing range through the city to Moreton Bay.It was not so, on  the 12th to 14th of January 2011. The river has broken its banks, and in some palces it was 6 to 8 meters high.
The Breakfast Creek Hotel was built in 1889, and its a landmark. historically and as an atractive colonial style building. This painting has taken me much longer to paint, and strange as it maybe, I looked at it and it gives some strange feelings of sorrow, on the other hand it can be somewhere as a romantic place in Venice Italy.

There's a beautiful haunting quality in your painting, signifying your feelings about the flooding for a historic landmark. It's important to document tragedy as well as beauty. You've done both.

It's a very beautiful and sad painting. I watched on TV, from Spain, cities's flood and fires. I hope soon all it will be as it went. Ben, take care.
